Part 5

Crown column sitting roughly in place, now to build a support to locate it. This puts all the electrics on the column which tidies up the dash and gives me an electric tilt column as well.
Drivers seat runner brackets made and welded in
Sump and steering rack in place.
Standard gearbox mount, I've built a new one using some red neoprene ones (the same as the engine mounts) as I found out the standard ones aren't very strong in standard NA (non aspirated or non turbo) form, so turbo's will kill them pretty quickly.

This is the new gearbox mount - made from teflon, in 2 parts to make it easier to remove and keep the clearance good with a tension bar across it. To be cleaned up and painted. It may be cold in Canberra - but at least rust isn't a problem!

New exhaust manifold plates cut at the steel shop by my good mate Tony.

I cut some 10mm plate I had lying around to make flanges, welded some steam pipe into it at an angle as suggested o the lextreme.com v8 forum to give me room to weld - worked a treat.

Started mocking it up on a big solid bit of channel (checked the fit of the mockup on the motor). Bought a couple of very good tungsten die grinder bits ($30 ea) - makes the hole cutting as easy as a knife through butter compared to those little cheap coloured carborundum grinding wheels. The smaller ones actually remove metal quicker and easier with less jumping around, so don't buy one too big.

Nearly there, spent $100 on steam pipe to date, 12 x 90's, 2m of straight pipe, all 35mm internal diameter.
Mounted in place - will run a brace later (that's what the extra lip is on the flange at the moment). Standard front at the moment, not sure if I'll continue with tilt due to extra work. (Note - I redid this side later as it didn't clear the AC compressor)

Second turbo hanging loosely in place - waiting to be set up.

I bought the turbo's from SSS in Sydney - they are secondhand Nissan/Garrett RB25DET (T3 style) turbo's from a R33 Skyline GTS25T. Ballbearing, oil and watercooled, internal wastegate with fast spool up. Their only problem is they have a ceramic wheel which does not like too much heat or boost - I've been told that 1.2 Bar is their limit or the cermic wheel can seperate! Long term I'll get them rebuilt or even replace them with new upgraded ones as they are getting cheaper every day.

Building second manifold, turbo 2 in place. BTW, I finally managed to rotate the turbo sections. Nothing like a little oxy heat to warm them up and get them moving! The turbo exhaust side was probably at 150 deg C before it turned - now it spins freely once the rust seal broke.
Both mounted, fairly symmetrical, strengthening plates to go, tidy up welds. Still need to work out a brace that allows for expansion and support as the pipes are fairly long. I think I'll just use some rod-ends and make up an adjustable brace with a turnbuckle.
