Wiring the 1UZ (Crown)

Disclaimer: firstly, this is how I did/am doing it, if you choose to follow my instructions, you do it at your own risk.

Note this is for the Crown, not a Soarer! The crown has seperate computers for the motor and gearbox, the soarer has one computer for both and is a bit trickier if you want to get rid of the auto! It also has a rubber donut output shaft on the auto rather than a spline as on the crown.

Ignition and sensor wiring

These are pics of the standard crown / 1UZ coil, igniter, speed sensor and crank angle sensor with their wiring.

Wiring for the Auto

These are the two wiring sockets on the gearbox. This will help you to wire up a tiptronic as I am.

  • S1 - Solenoid 1 (Gear selection)
  • S2 - Solenoid 2 (Gear selection)
  • S3 - Solenoid 3 (Torque converter lockup)
  • S4 - Solenoid 4 (Line pressure - max when not connected)
  • B+ - 12v from ignition - input for solenoids

Gears - switching the solenoids

  • 1st = S1 On S2 Off
  • 2nd = S1 On S2 On
  • 3rd = S1 Off S2 On
  • 4th = S1 Off S2 Off

Gearbox outputs

These let you know what gear you are in - outputs to the gear selector indicator / speedo

  • P = Park
  • R = Reverse
  • N = Neutral
  • D = Drive
  • 2 = Second
  • L = Low
  • B+ = 12v from Ignition
  • NSW - the 2 contacts for theNeutral safety switch (makes/breaks circuit when not in park or neutral - stops you starting in gear - very dangerous and illegal)

Torque Converter Lockup

This is a good circuit that will cut the lockup when you touch the brakes. I'll look at using the extra inputs/outputs from the 8860 to control it instead of this - ie: off below 1% throttle, above 12% throttle to disconnect it with a relay, the tiptronic will engage and disengage it. They are very weak and will die if loaded up too much (which a turbo or two will do). Good to use them though as they improve fuel economy and let the gearbox run cooler.
